Rhayuela Films: "A thousand tusks allows us to be on the radar of many platforms"

The Colombian production company makes its debut in fiction for TV with A Thousand Fangs, the first HBO Latin America original series in the country. Federico Durán, executive producer, explains to ttvOriginals the artisan look they have of the audiovisual and the new incentives to produce in Colombia.

Rhayuela Films, a Colombian production company recognized for its long and successful career in advertising, video clips and cinema, can boast of having entered the world of television fiction through the big door: HBO Latin America chose it to produce its first original series in Colombia.

Announced in 2018 and scheduled for release in 2020, A Thousand Fangs is an action, horror and suspense thriller, an unprecedented foray into these genres for HBO in the region.

The story, written and directed by Jaime Osorio (El páramoSiete cabezas), begins when an elite command of the Colombian Army is deployed in the jungle with the mission of ending the mysterious leader of a sect that keeps a secret of more than 500 years.

ttvOriginals spoke with Federico Durán, executive producer of A Thousand Fangs by Rhayuela Films, on the highly anticipated series and the challenges of producing quality television in Colombia.

¿Cómo está siendo la entrada de Rhayuela Films en televisión?

We are finishing A Thousand Fangs, and we have several other series projects in development coming for 2020 and 2021.

We come from the cinema, a world in which we have all the contacts, all the knowledge of how it works… and we are in the process of getting into television. A Thousand Fangs It allows us to be on the radar of many platforms, but we like to go little by little, solidify relationships.

HBO is a very important partner for us. And we are at a point where we do not want to cover a lot and squeeze little, as they say, but we want to do good things and how we like it: with our hands.

¿Cómo entiende Rhayuela la producción de ficción para TV?

For us the audiovisual is still something that goes between the industrial part and the artistic, authorial part, and we are very passionate about it.

In some way, the platforms have approached this with much shorter series, with production models much closer to creation and authorship, and this has opened up the possibility of working with platforms and premium television channels, which is what we are doing now.

We see the market for platforms and premium channels as a market that is possible for what we have done in cinema for many years: a much more boutique look at audiovisuals.

¿Cómo ha sido el trabajo con HBO?

They are super demanding, super experts, they have a very clear vision of where they want to take the projects, on the artistic, conceptual and technical level. And we at the same time brought a very passionate project, with a lot of impetus. So it was very good because all that strengthened the project a lot.

¿Qué desafíos tuvo la producción de Mil colmillos?

In this case, the production had to adapt to the project, due to the type of locations, the amount of action, the effects ... The project was very demanding, and the production model itself had to be like this, regardless of who we were involved with. to the. It was very demanding to have the crew, all the infrastructure to reach the locations that were very complex, it was very demanding in shooting conditions.

¿Qué diferencias encuentran al financiar una serie respecto a una película?

The issue of financing is changing a lot. In the cinema, normally for development and to have seed capital one looks for funds, subsidies, co-productions, and at a more advanced stage one gets involved with the issue of sales and television channels. With television it works differently, because one makes a development and already at a relatively quick point one is ready to talk to channels and platforms.

So I feel like it moves a little faster. Although at the same time there are a large number of projects on the market, and that is the great challenge: finding the differential so that your project is the one they are looking for.

¿Qué atractivos ofrece Colombia para producir series?

Many productions are being made in Colombia. HBO, Amazon, Netflix, Movistar, Telemundo ... large international platforms and channels are coming to produce in the country.

In addition, a law has just been approved that will give a tax incentive of 35% to the production of television series in Colombia. In other words, the cost will be reduced by 35% in everything that has to do with expenses, talent, actors, etc., as long as it is Colombian.

This is a huge incentive for the entire premium TV industry, and it is sure to attract international startups to invest here.
